THE LENGTH OF THE MAIN STEM OF PITE RIVER IS OVER 400 KILOMETRES. THE GREAT LAKES MAVASJAURE AND LAKE PIESKEHAURE AT THE NORWEGIAN BORDER ARE THE SOURCE LAKES OF THE RIVER. PITEÄLVEN CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THREE DIFFERENT PARTS;

MOUNTAIN RIVER FROM LAKE MAVASJAURE / PIESKEHAURE DOWN TO LAKE TJEGGELVAS,

THE FOREST RIVER FROM LAKE TJEGGELVAS DOWN TO STORFORSEN (EUROPE'S LARGEST UNBINDED WATERFALL), AND

THE COASTAL RIVER FROM STORFORSEN AND DOWN TO CITY OF PITEÅ AND THE SEA.
